running accessories for women

12/10/2021 by Bridget

You want to start running and wonder what running accessories you will be needing.

two women with sports scarves

Well, here they are. Tried and tested.

  1. cap or beanie
  2. neck covering
  3. vests
  4. light layer
  5. warmer layer
  6. hands
  7. shorts
  8. socks
  9. listen up
  10. keep tracking

My favorite running accessories for women are things that I have gathered together over the last 10 years. They are not top of the range but they have served me well.

So from the top of your head to the tips of your feet, this is what I do and have done to get myself out of the door on a regular basis. You can do this too.

cap or beanie anyone?

Covering your head with a cap in summer is essential. Protecting yourself from the sun, sometimes sheltering your eyes when it rains, and just keeping your hair tamed are all good reasons to wear a cap.

In winter and other colder times, a beanie is essential. We lose heat from the top of our heads so it is important to prevent that from happening. A beanie is an excellent running accessory for women because it covers your ears as well. Protect your ears people. Frozen ears are no jokes.

Optional: Sunglasses in winter or summer is optional extra running accessories for women for me. You certainly do not have to have a pair when you start out. I find that I need them more in summer than in winter. Give them a try.

head and neck running accessories

What is very important for me in spring, winter and autumn is a gaiter.

This small ‘scarf’ can also be pulled up over your chin or over your mouth when it is very cold. If I do not run with this then I find that I am susceptible to catching a cold, somehow my body is sensitive in this area.

They come in various thicknesses and warmth. There are also many different types of designs.

tops running accessories

It is important to dress in layers because often when you set out it is cold but you will warm up as you run. It is convenient to be able to peel off layers as you go. Regulating your body temperature in this way is very important.

vest tops

The first layer for me is usually a vest-type running top with an integrated bra in it. I like the integration of the bra because it is simpler and has fewer things to think about when you are traveling.

It is very basic and no matter what the weather condition is, this is the final layer that I can strip down to.

Over that, I usually put on a simple long-sleeved sports top. I do not like buttons or zips in this layer. This usually is enough for me through the warmer months.

As you put together your running go-to, this can be an area where you can experiment with. Remember too, to have fun with styles and colors that will be fun for you to wear. Enjoy the process.

In winter I put on over that a zipped polar fleece top. I do not usually need more layers than that. It is a bit chilly when you step out but as you keep moving it is absolutely fine.

I have never bought the specialist gear, the stuff I find at discount stores has lasted me for many years and quite a few races.

hands running accessories

Keeping my hands warm is very important. This is a running accessory for women that cannot be skipped.

If you are planning on running in a cold country through the winter, gloves will be necessary. I have my usual sports gloves and I sometimes have to put my everyday winter gloves over to keep warm.

gloves

My hand and feet are always cold so I have to make sure they are well covered and insulated.

legs

I love the shorts that I have with integrated tights for the height of summer. They are perfect for when I travel too because the underwear is part of the shorts, they are great. When we travel to countries where shorts are not appropriate then I use my 3/4 leggings. They are my safe running accessory item, I can wear them anywhere.

I also use them when I cycle. They do not have integrated underwear in them but I do have synthetic underwear that I use with them. You cannot run without the underwear under nor could you go for a cycle without the underwear. Not a pretty sight if you do.

The sports underwear needs to be made of something synthetic that can dry very quickly and keep the moisture/sweat away from your body. Cotton undies will not do. Chafing is no fun. Do not try. They are not expensive and last for a very long time.

In winter I use long leggings to cover every inch of my legs. When it is very cold outside then I will also add another pair of synthetic leggings underneath.

how many pairs or sets do you need?

I’ve always felt the need to own 3 sets of running accessories BUT it has never been necessary. I have 2 of everything and I’ve always had something to wear. When you start out, get supplies from your local discount store. If you want to upgrade after a while when you know that this is definitely for you then you have time to save for the best that you can afford.

happy feet running accessories for women

Please treat yourself and buy yourself the best running shoes you can afford. Make a trip to your local sports store, walk or jog on the treadmill that they have in the store.

They will be able to see what kind of shoe would correct or support any issue you may have in your stride/gait. It is worth it.

If you feel embarrassed, please don’t – go with a friend. Take someone with you for support. Injuries are just not worth the guessing game in this area.

running shoes

It is also important for you to tell them which terrain you will mostly be running on. This too could be a factor in your choice of running shoes. The shoes usually last you for about 2 years, so buy carefully.

Also do not feel the pressure to buy straight away, take your time, read up a bit and do some research.

Please do not forget to buy yourself some socks. They do not have to be special. I do not recommend invisible socks, you may experience some chafing along the top of the shoe. Cotton socks are also not a good idea. Synthetic is the way to go, you do not need sweaty feet ever!

extra special running accessories

The running watch. Come on people, if you can’t record or measure it – does it really count? I started with the very basic Garmin and now after 10 years have the super special Garmin for triathlons. These are great gifts to ask from your family and friends, they can club together and treat you.

sports watch and headphones

The headphones are an optional extra, totally not necessary. I love my headphones as when I run I totally switch off and whatever I am listening to helps me to totally switch off.

You can start today, fancy equipment is not a necessity. The only important thing to make sure you have is a good pair of running shoes. What is the most important accessory for you to have for running? Drop me a line in the comments, I may need that and I just don’t know it yet!
