types of pens you can take onto a plane
While a normal pen or pencil is considered to be a sharp object that could cause harm to another person, it is unlikely to happen.
rollerball pens, gel pens, and ballpoint pens
These two, the rollerball pen and the ballpoint pens, are the most common pens in the average Joe’s pocket or bag. There is NO restriction to carrying them. So, yes – you can take these pens with you on a plane.
The gel pen can also leak when the cabin pressure changes. The higher altitudes force the ‘liquid’ out of the pen and this can get messy. Be prepared.
But, there is always something, right?
Proceed with caution, especially with the rollerball pen – it can leak when the pressure in the cabin of the plane changes. So whether you have one in your carry-on luggage the air pressure can force some of the ink out. It can get a bit messy.
What to do?
- Have them packed in a sealed ziplock bag. This will prevent any spillage from getting onto your clothing or documents.
- Keep their lids on, tightly on.

These can be carried in your hand luggage with you because they do not pose any safety threat. They also do not need sharpening so pencil sharpeners will not have to be carried. This makes it simple and easier.
A very normal pencil with a pencil sharpener can also be carried in your hand luggage with you onto a plane.
