Can you bring/take deodorant on the plane in carry-on luggage? There are many types of deodorant to consider when you ask and then want to answer this question.
Knowing what you can and what you cannot bring onto a plane will make your travel more stress free and therefore more enjoyable. There is absolutely no need to stress about how much and which deodorant to take with you.

The guidelines are simple and if you stick to them, one you will travel stress-free and two, you’ll be carrying a bit less.
- stress-free
- less-is-best
Don’t let the excitement of going on a trip be spoiled by rules and regulations. Air travel and what to do with your carry-on baggage can easily be sorted out and understood.
Keep to the guidelines and rules and you will enjoy any trip.
It is not confusing, it is simple.
You can take both solid and liquid deodorant onto a plane with you. But there are restrictions. Any deodorant container must not be more than 3,4 oz/100ml.
USA TRAVEL SPECIFIC – CAN YOU BRING DEODORANT ON THE PLANE IN CARRY ON?
If you do not know what the TSA (transportation security administration) rules are – you could have your deodorant taken away from you.
3-1-1 rule
This is a USA specific rule because it refers to what you are allowed to carry on to a plane.

What is this?
This is a simple, easy to remember rule.
- 3 = just under 3,4 oz liquid
- 1=one bag
- 1=per person
More information can easily be found on the tsa website.
OTHER DESTINATIONS – CAN YOU BRING DEODORANT ON THE PLANE IN CARRY ON?
The TSA(transportation security administration) rules are not only specific to the USA but the same rules apply internationally in other countries too.
This translates well to any other place you travel because the laws and regulations are the same in all airports across the world.
For the rest of us, who are not from the USA it may look like this:
100-1-1 rule
- 100ml liquid
- 1=bag
- 1=per person
The bag
You can take see-through quart-sized bags of sprays/aerosols, creams, liquids and pastes through airport security.
Make sure that the bag is a resealable bag.

All the items must fit in one bag. You do not really want to be carrying more than this because you have to unpack it all at the security checkpoint. If you keep it simple and to the essentials you will have a super calm security check.

Kind of deodorant to carry in your carry-on
WITHOUT restrictions (solid form)
This form of deodorant forms no risk for safety for anyone.

- Crystal deodorant
- Powder deodorant
- Solid stick deodorants

WITH restrictions (liquid form)
These may and could be considered a security risk. These deodorants need to comply with the 3-1-1 liquid rules set out by the tsa.
- Liquid deodorant
- Spray deodorant
- Aerosol deodorant
- Gel deodorant
- Roll-on deodorants

Spray and aerosol deodorants can be taken in your carry-on luggage when:
- The spray/aerosol type of deodorant cannot be larger in content volume than 100 ml (3,4oz). Even if it is half full, you still cannot take it with you.
- Get your favorite deodorant in the travel-sized deodorant that is less than 100ml(3,4oz).
- If you want to take a larger size, then be sure to pack it into your checked in luggage.
Why the restrictions?
Anything liquid over 100ml(3,4oz) carried in hand luggage could potentially pose an explosive risk. Explosives can be made from gels and liquids and this is why they carry a risk. Carrying very small amounts reduces this risk significantly and can therefore pass through airport security and onto a plane.
In an aerosol or spray can, there is liquid in the can.
Options
You can always put your deodorant that exceed the size restrictions into your checked baggage and get it when you arrive at your destination. If it is over 3,4oz(100ml) pack it away in your checked luggage.
This is a good option because having your favorite deodorant with you at your destination is far better than having it removed by a tsa agent at the airport. They are just complying with the tsa guidelines.
They will confiscate anything that does not comply with these simple guidelines.
Security checks
Keep the stress out of traveling and know what the tsa officers will be watching out for. The transport security administration (tsa) has set up a simple screening process.
The airports all have large bins ready to dispose of any liquids over 3,4 oz (100ml).
Be ready with the 3-1-1 rule.
Under 3,4oz (100ml)
One person with one carry-on item.
Airport security does not have to be stressful if you adhere to the regulations and keep your packing simple. Avoid additional screening, stick to the guidelines.
Keeping it simple
When you regularly go to the gym or to a swimming pool then it is a good idea to carry your deodorant, shampoo, comb and body lotion/cream with you.
This can then easily double up as a cosmetic carry-on onto any international or domestic flights.

A gym cosmetic bag can have the following:
- Bar soap that can be used on the body and on your hair
- Body lotion/cream that doubles up too as conditioner for your hair
- Deodorant
- Comb
Very simple and no fuss.
A gym cosmetic bag transforms into carryon cosmetic bag, for me, by only adding the following:
- Medication
- Contact lens solution
Take note of the quantity and type of deodorant
The deodorant and cream or body lotion could pose a security risk, so ALWAYS keep the quantity in your sports bag less than 3,4 oz or 100ml.
When you have to get onto any plane you will not have to adjust the sizes.
Keep it simple.
If you have to take larger quantities on board a plane because of medical conditions be sure to have all the most recent and updated medical papers with you.
Remember
You can always carry larger amounts and quantities of deodorant with you but pack it away in your checked in luggage.

Make sure everything is well sealed and stored in a water proof zip lock bag or cosmetic bag. The bags get quite a rough treatment by the baggage handlers and you do not want your deodorant, cream or shampoo to be spread throughout your bag.

Items such as lithium batteries, disposable razors, snow globes, and sharp objects may all have different rules applied to them at different airports. To give a short answer – pack them into your checked luggage if you do not have time to research this.
